Random Acts of Senseless Fuckery
At least in my humble opion
Published on January 9, 2005 By evilPidge In Music
Well since the masses have been begging for me to blog again (ok it was just two people that dropped hints that its been a long time since I've blogged) I thought I better do something.

Recently I have been getting into Cover songs. Now I used to be of the opinion that 90% of all covers suck. I am/was of the opinion that there are too many damn covers out there and these slacker artists outta get off their asses and come up with their own damned songs!

Now let me explain. I usually hate covers because most fall into one of two catagories.

1) The song sounds exactly the same with someone else singing it. WTF, don't they have a shred of creativity?!
2) There is no way in hell this is the same song!? WTF haven't they heard the original?

Now I know that sounds sorta contadictory, but I feel that covering a song is a fine balance between old a new. These ones I've been recently have been a bit differnt. Most are covers of hit pop songs done in SKA or Punk. Which in and of itself doesn't make them any better, I've just been in that sorta mood. What is good about these songs is that they seem to (again in my opinion) strike a good balance of keeping the song sounding like the original, but moderizing/punkifying the song.

The other big thing is that I don't think I've heard a single one of these song on the radio. What that says to me is that these guys aren't trying to ride someone else's coattails. These are fun songs, and the band put them on their CDs to let people listen to their interpretation of the songs.

So anyway, here are some of the covers I've been listening to and the band that does them.

Dancing With Myself - Blink 182
Sex and Candy - 2 on 1
I Want Candy - Good Charlotte
Turning Japanese - Guttermouth
The Glory of Love - New Found Glory *
Always Something There to Remind Me - The Hippos*
Bad Moon Rising - Lagwagon
Build Me Up Buttercup - Save Ferris
California Dreaming - Hi Standard
Paint it Black - Gob
I think I Love You - Less Than Jake *
I Would Walk 500 Miles - Less Than Jake*
It Must Have Been Love - Happy Hour*
Mrs. Robinson - Pennywise
Hungry Like the Wolf - Reel Big Fish
Uptown Girl - Weezer

* - Yes, I realize that I loose guy points for not only liking the original songs, but the covers as well.

The Glory of Love - New Found Glory

My favorite of the bunch!!

As for guy points...you have so many guy points other guys are jealous (yes, I know I've told you that before, but I wanted the public to know too! )

Great list.

This may make you cringe but I've always liked the 'Behind Blue Eyes' cover by Limp Bizkit.
But that's just me.

Gotta love Goldfingers cover of "99 Luft Balloons"
Johnny Cash doing "Hurt" and "Personal Jesus"

Fred Durst should be executed for his lame ass cover of "Behind Blue Eyes" (And everything else they ever did)
I also hate A perfect Circle's cover of "Imagine" If I want to listen to off key crap, I'll buy an Ashlee Simpson CD.

Good covers, I think. I am personally fond of Marilyn Manson's covers. He is a bit odd (ok....a lot odd) but I think he does pretty well with the songs that he chooses. But thats just me. And anything that Johnny Cash decided to do, he did well. I like him a lot.

have good moshpitting!!!

SSG,

Mucho agreed on the Cash. Glad someone else noticed "Personal Jesus", which, I thought, was a potentially stronger cover than "Hurt"; although, not as many were familiar with the original on the latter. Another nod to Cash for "In My Life", which was as appropriate as "Hurt".

The latest Rush EP is some covers from 67-68. Great stuff. Especially "The Seeker", "Crossroads" (Alex Lifeson blows EC away on that one), "How it is", and "Mr. Soul". Awesome album.

I also love Queensryche's cover of Scarborough Fair. Haunting, eerie, awesome. Nevermore's cover of "The Sound of Silence" is incredibly brutal. In a good way.

You're so metal Doc

I know, a metal loving Mormon. I must be some sort of heretic.

Oh, and I am listening to Warrell Dane wail "And the vision that was planted in my brain" right now. Not quit the same effect as Paul and Art, but very, very cool.

Anything by Richard Cheese (His cover of Nirvana's "Rape Me" is my personal fave.)

His stuff is awesome!

There was a recent remake of 'If you leave' on the soundtrack of some teen (or not) movie. I liked that a lot.
